We strive to avoid using synthetics where possible, but they are sometimes necessary to achieve specific effects that naturals alone cannot provide. For example, Asubuhi features a very prominent wet, grassy, green note in the opening, which is achieved through a combination of cis-3-hexanol (a natural isolate) and galbanum resinoid, among other elements.
When we use synthetics, it’s always for a specific purpose, whether to achieve a desired effect, enhance natural materials, or ensure sustainability. If the scent of a synthetic material is prominent, we carefully balance it with naturals to create harmony and depth. Asubuhi illustrates this approach well: the grassy opening notes are balanced with spices like cardamom, celery, and ginger.
In many cases, synthetics serve subtly, uplifting and enhancing other notes. For instance, in Silk Dunes, we use safraleine to boost the spices and anise, but it’s used at such a low dosage that it blends seamlessly into the composition. Our goal is always to prioritise the beauty and complexity of natural materials while using synthetics sparingly and purposefully.
