Orange blossom and close to forty ouds. Jambi, Sumatra first-pull tops, three maroke, two Aceh, silani, wild Khoi Ken, Tripura and vintage Tripura, Laos, kanawa, malino, Pontianak, Kalimantan, triple-distilled Trat, Nagaland, Bangladeshi, and codistillations of Koh Kong with assam, rose with maroke, Manipur with rose. Several further origins are not disclosed. Dust of hindi and maroke wood was boiled into part of the oil, hot coals placed directly inside the sealed vessel at temperature, and the whole flash frozen at minus twenty five degrees.

رحلة نحو الإلهام

Every oud is a place. That is the first thing anyone serious about the material learns, and it is why the trade is organised by region rather than by quality. A Trat and a Nagaland are not two grades of the same substance.

So an oil with forty of them is either incoherent or it is a map, and I did not know which until it was made. The obvious risk is that specificity cancels. Put enough distinct origins in one bottle and you get a generic oud, which is the exact failure the line exists to avoid.

The coals are the part I would defend least and believe most. Boiling wood dust into the oil, then putting live coals inside the sealed vessel and freezing the whole thing at minus twenty five, is not a step I can justify by theory. I did it because burning is how this material has been encountered for most of its history, and distillation is a recent abstraction from that. The freeze stops the reaction at a point I chose rather than a point the heat chose.

The orange blossom is the only thing in it that is not oud. It is there to give the nose somewhere to stand.
